Dear Santa, I would like a goalscorer...

Plymouth Argyle have been linked with a swoop for Bristol City striker Marcus Stewart. Tony Pulis is keen to bring fresh faces to Home Park, particularly in the goal-scoring department.

In recent days, The Pilgrims have been the focus of many newspaper stories, with Bristol and Plymouth-based tabloids latching onto the Stewart story. As of yet, none of this speculation has been confirmed by either club but Robins manager Gary Johnson did say that "Everyone is available at the right time and for the right price" when questioned by the club's official website. Stewart would certainly be a shrewd move, a proven goalscorer in The Championship with valuable Premiership and UEFA Cup experience. The 32-year old is pacey and a good finisher, possessing the right qualities to compliment Plymouth target man, Mickey Evans. Stewart was the top goalscorer in The Premiership in the 2000/01 season with 21 goals.

With four first-team strikers on the books, there is every incentive for the misfiring Scott Taylor to find his form again, should the former Ipswich frontman join him at Home Park. Taylor is now 29 but has scored just 5 goals in Plymouth colours - quite disappointing from a player who had bagged 61 goals in less than 3 years at Blackpool. He has now accumulated 3 votes in our poll for 'Argyle's Best Player'. I'm sure Scott will be trying his absolute best to rediscover his eye-for-goal and Plymouth fans must support the players during difficult spells. He is obvious talent and I believe it's only a matter of time before the team begins to gel under Pulis, I hope Taylor can lead Argyle's revival.

The Greens have also been linked with Linfield striker Peter Thompson by a national newspaper. The 18-year old is a semi-professional League of Northern Ireland player whose impressive, goalscoring form has earned him a call-up to Lawrie Sanchez's squad along with Plymouth left-flanker Tony Capaldi. Pulis did not comment specifically on the player, but did say "We are tracking anyone and everyone at the moment".

The Argyle cheif did, however, rule out a move for Derby County defender Mo Konjic and also dismissed the club's chances of signing Port Vale's Billy Paynter, who is likely to join ex-Valiant Sam Collins at Hull City.

The welshman also played down rumours of a spat between him and Leicester City manager Craig Levein following last tuesday's abandoned match. He discarded the claims as "a load of nonsense".
