The Dons boss, who Crawford played under during their time together at Dunfermline, has been alerted by the Argyle strikers reported wishes to return north-of-the-border.
"We are interested in Stevie Crawford and we have made an inquiry," Calderwood said.
"I have spoken to Bobby Williamson because I am well aware of the player's situation. I was talking to Bobby the other day and he made it clear they don't want to lose him, but it's only because of his personal side that he might be coming back.
"The situation being the way it is I think Stevie will be coming back to Scotland, it's just a matter of where he goes because we know other clubs are interested.
"The groundwork has all been done and if we get the money from the board then I already know what Plymouth are looking for to let him come home.
"To be honest for a player of his calibre it is a very reasonable figure but we have to see what our budget is going to be.
"The board have been told about our plans and what they would cost so it is up to them but the supporters should know that is the quality of players we want to get in."
