Oldham took the game to Argyle and were rewarded inside two minutes of the second half when Dale Stephens coolly fired them ahead from 10 yards. Oumare Tounkara sealed the points for the Latics when he crashed a thumping drive into the roof of the net in the 72nd minute.
Yannick Bolasie blazed over the crossbar from 12 yards with only the goalkeeper to beat in the 14th minute and Reid felt that was a turning point.
Reid said: "It was a game of few chances for either team. Basically we had two chances in the first half, but didn't take them and they had two chances in the second and took both of them.
"I don't really remember our goalkeeper David Button or their goalkeeper having to make a save. If Yannick takes his chance, hits the target, then it could have been a different game.
"It was an early chance and you've got to hit the target from there, with only the goalkeeper to beat."
