Plymouth Argyle executive director Keith Todd has said focus on the city's World Cup bid did not have a negative effect on the troubled club. The club, who currently face a winding-up petition, were a potential 2018 World Cup venue if England had been chosen to host the tournament.

Todd said: "There's been absolutely the necessary focus [on the club] needed.

"It [the bid] was a lot of extra work for a few people, but it didn't affect what was going on on the pitch.

He told BBC Spotlight: "There were certain individuals who were involved and working long hours to ensure that the best bid could be submitted."

Russia was chosen by Fifa's executive committee on Thursday as the host nation for 2018, scuppering Plymouth's plans to hold matches at their Home Park stadium.
