Dagenham & Redbridge made history as they reached the fourth round of the FA Cup for the first time with a shock win against Plymouth.

It was a spectacular win for the Daggers as the whole nation watched them defeat the second division side with a goal in each half.

The Daggers made a bright start in front of 4,500 fans and had the better of the opening stages although Plymouth carved out the clearer opportunities in the first period.

Marino Keith was guilty of some glaring misses, most notably when he shot over from point-blank range and he then screwed a shot wide when clean through. He also hit a post with a low shot from 25 yards.

In contrast Daggers were efficient in front of goal, unlike the first game ten days ago.

In the 20th minute Paul Terry's dangerous corner was flicked on at the near post by Ashley Vickers and the ball deflected against the underside of the bar when almost everyone in the ground thought it had gone in.

Moments later the ball found its way to Danny Shipp on the right-hand side of the box and he cut inside before curling a left-foot shot which deflected off Lee Hodges and past a helpless Romain Larrieu .

The Daggers had to endure a tense period before half time as Plymouth enjoyed their best spell of the match.

After missing those opportunities the second division side were subdued by a tireless Daggers outfit that created the better chances after the break.

Junior McDougald twice beat Larrieu to the ball but could not find a team-mate to finish with the goal unguarded.

A tie against Norwich City was eventually secured five minutes from time. Following a neat move on the right, Mark Janney's far post cross was met by McDougald's diving header and the ball squeezed off a defender and in to the net.

David Friio missed a free header in the dying seconds but Daggers were already through and there were joyous scenes at Victoria Road at the final whistle.

Daggers manager Garry Hill said after the match: "This is a tremendous night for the club and for non-league football.

"I haven't even thought about Norwich in the next round yet as this hasn't even sunk in."
